Severe Weather Update–Watch Issued By SPC For Jersey

Garden State Under Severe Thunderstorm Watch Until 7:00 PM

Here’s another update on the severe weather situation here in New Jersey.  The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for 11 counties in Jersey until 7:00 PM.  All of these counties cover the northern half of the Garden State.  According to this watch, portions of Western Connecticut, Southeastern New York, and Central and Eastern Pennsylvania are also under the gun.

The watch area covers a swath of real estate that is 60 miles on either side of a line extending from 20 miles west-northwest of Williamsport, Pennsylvania to about 5 miles southeast of Bridgeport, Connecticut.  This area is susceptible to thunderstorms producing 70 mile per hour winds, 1.5 inch diameter hail, and dangerous lightning.

Currently, a fast moving line of storms in Western New York appears to be getting stronger as it moves into the warm humid air over our region.  With a moist low level flow and strong upper level winds, the ingredients are coming together for strong to severe thunderstorms to develop during the course of this afternoon.

GWC will continue to monitor the progress of these storms.
