NWS Issues Special Weather Statement

Showers and thunderstorms were already expected for the afternoon on Sunday here in Central Jersey, but they are coming with a good deal of rain.  A line of thunderstorms extending from Mount Pocono in Northeastern Pennsylvania to as far south as Reading were pushing eastward as of an hour ago.

The National Weather Service acted on this, and issued a special weather statement for portions of Western Jersey including Hunterdon, Morris, Sussex, and Warren counties a little more than an hour ago.  Tracking this line on doppler radar, the thunderstorms were more prominent about 15 to 20 minutes ago, but have waned a bit in intensity.  I happened to be out on a walk during my break, and noticed some small cumulus clouds acting as a leading edge for a sheet of cloudiness moving in from the west.

These storms have thunderstorms embedded in them that are capable of producing copious amounts of rain in a short time, which could result in ponding on roadways.  We’ll continue to monitor the progress of these storms as they head eastward.
