New York City And New Jersey Mobilize In Preparation For Irene

Good afternoon everyone. I went out to get some supplies and had some dinner before getting back to work on the blog and web site. There is a lot of traffic on the roads right now. Whether for evacuation, or getting out to the stores for supplies, it is still a good indication that people are heeding the advice of public officials.

Below are some of the services that are going to be shutdown by NJ Transit and the MTA in New York starting on Saturday:

New Jersey

• NJ Transit will be suspending rail service starting at noon on Saturday through Sunday. Bus , light rail, and Access Link services will be suspended from 6:00 PM on Saturday through Sunday.
• The Garden State Parkway South will be closed from Exit 98 near Belmar. All traffic will be redirected to Interstate 195.

New York

• The MTA will begin to suspend its subway, bus, Long Island Rail Road, and Metro North railroads starting at noon on Saturday. The standard procedure is that these services shut down approximately eight hours prior to the onset of tropical storm force winds (39 miles per hour).
• New York City area bridges will close if and when winds reach 60 miles per hour, or the winds are accompanied by other weather conditions such as flooding
• There will be no scheduled pickups after noon on Saturday for Access-A-Ride. However, Access-A-Ride will be working with the NYC Office of Emergency Management to arrange for evacuation of disabled residents.

New York City

• Residents in Zone A face the highest risk of flooding from a hurricane’s storm surge. Zone A includes all low-lying coastal areas and other areas that could experience storm surge from ANY hurricane making landfall close to New York City. Those areas include:

• Broad Channel
• South Beach
• Midland Beach
• Battery Park City
• The Rockaways

Long Island

• Nassau County is ordering mandatory evacuations for everyone south of Sunrise Highway between Queens and Rockville Centre, and south of Merrick Road from Rockville Centre to the Suffolk border.
• Mandatory Evacuations have begun on Fire Island.
• Suffolk County is ordering mandatory evacuations for the following areas: Blue Point, south of Montauk Highway; Patchogue, south of Main Street, East Patchogue south of Main Street, east to the intersection of South Country Road and south of South Country Road; Bellport, south of South Country Road; Brookhaven, south of South Country Road; Shirley, south of Golden Gate Road at the intersection of Neighborhood Road, south all the way to Smithtown Park; the entire village of Mastic Beach; Moriches, south of Main Street; Center Moriches, south of Main Street; Cedar Beach Peninsula in Mt. Sinai; East Moriches, south of East Moriches Boulevard, including the Newport Beach community.
