High Risk Of Rip Currents Along Jersey Shore On Sunday

Good morning. Nothing really significant is developing in the Atlantic Tropics at the moment, but there are some areas of concern this Sunday. One area is close to home. An area of low pressure has formed along a frontal boundary that extends off the East Coast of the United States. This low, which is located South of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, is generating showers and storms along the coast from North Carolina to South Carolina.

However, that is not the only story with this low. It is combining with high pressure that is building to the north to create a strong easterly flow. As a result, it’s going to get a bit rough out there along the coast as a Small Craft Advisory is in effect for the Coastal Waters of New Jersey, and down the Atlantic coastline. There is also a high probability for rip currents at all of the Jersey shore beaches. Not a good way to end the Labor Day Holiday if these beaches are forced to keep folks out of the water.

Elsewhere around the Atlantic Basin, there are some showers and storms in the Western Gulf of Mexico near Tampico, Mexico, but it is very close to the coast right now, and there is no indication that this, or the low off the East Coast will develop into anything. Moving out into the Eastern Atlantic, Hurricaneville is still watching an area of low pressure located some 550 miles West-Northwest of the Cape Verde Islands. The low is moving to the West-Northwest at about 15 miles per hour, but it has become less organized during the overnight hours while also moving into an area where upper level winds are hostile towards development. Meanwhile, the remnant low that was formerly Tropical Storm Erika has been absorbed by another low near the Bahamas.

Waves continue to depart from the West African coast into the Eastern Atlantic. A cluster of showers and storms just moved into the Atlantic over the past few hours, and should bring rain to the Cape Verde Islands over the next 48 hours. Behind that, there is another area of disturbed weather in the Sahel near South Central Mali, Western Burkina Faso, Northwestern Ghana, and Northeastern Ivory Coast. Another thunderstorm complex is moving through Nigeria while there are scattered showers and storms to the east in the Sudan and Ethiopia.

Hurricaneville will continue to monitor developments in the Atlantic Tropics, and post updates when they warrant.
