- "Hey I was just paging through sites with the history that made my hometown school's name. I played sports all through middle and high school in Westhampton Beach and we were called the HURRICANES. I always heard little stories about where the name came from but it wasn't until I got to read through the whole rundown of the 1938 on your site when I finally pieced it all together. I remember walking down the hallways in school looking at the class pictures that date back all the way till the start of school for Westhampton. And I noticed that all the pics before the Hurricane were water damaged and some missing. Then there was an old building that was one of the few to survive downtown, where it would freak you out to look 30ft upwards at the old clock that stopped ticking when the ocean rose. You could actually see a water mark lining half way through the clock. It just looks like death. When I was younger I always wondered why I would dig up seashells in my backyard, being that my house was not waterfront but actually about 1 minute drive down the road inward from the shinnecock inlet. But now I know that my property was once under water, my house would have been destroyed and I really hope no one died there previously -because it freaks me out, too much devestation. I can't seem to get away from hurricanes, I literally barely survived the recent 4 hurricanes in FL where I am for college. 3 of them crossed directly over my house, you could track it out like where x marks the spot, I'm in the middle of the x. But that's a whole nother story I should make into site. Anyways! Good Job, it seems this must have been a school project for you or something from reading your other responses. That's impressive."--Rachelle, East Quogue, Long Island, New York
